EuroButt " is short for, Euro pean concealed hinge and Butt hinge.
We had just finished setting the doors on a traditional paint grade library cabinet. I had to convince the designers to let me use concealed hinges because of the adjustment advantages, they finally conceded.
We took a coffee break and looked at the project we had just finished, (in the shop).
The cabinets were assembled, (looking great) with solid brass knobs on white painted raised panel doors........ when I said to the guys, "something is missing.....", then I said, ''it needs hinges''. I took a ball tip hinge and placed it in the door gap and said, ''That's it, it needs butt hinges, why can't we just screw the butt hinge to the edge of the door and let the concealed hinge do the work?''
...The designers were right in specifying a butt hinge for this Traditional Design.
9 minutes later we had cut and beaten the butt hinge into submission, it wouldn't work the way it was made. We had a crude mock up of what was to become, the EuroButt II hinge.
Honestly it took a few more minutes to nail down some issues, a few more weeks to do drawings and a patent search, several months to get the patent, a year to get the first hinges manufactured, then just a few more months to get
EuroButt II into the market, with the help of many other people who eventually became friends.
EuroButt II was developed to resolve the design problem, where the design element of the traditional finial tip or ball tip butt hinge, (decorative hinge) is being left out of the traditional project because of the advantages in function, quality, and price that concealed hinges have to offer.
The bottom line, cabinetmakers don't want to give up the advantages they have with the concealed hinge, but the market is demanding decorative hardware.....
